How We
Can Help
Home-Start Merton is valued
by other agencies as a useful addition to the services they provide for families.
The volunteer's friendly support is not intended to be a substitute for professional
services and the best results are achieved through an active partnership between
professionals and Home-Start.
Our carefully chosen, trained
and then carefully matched volunteers provide support, friendship and practical
help to families experiencing difficulties and could include:-

How
do they help?
- A trained volunteer
listens, supports, encourages and gives practical help for as long as
necessary. They visit families in their own homes where the dignity
and identity of each individual can be respected and protected.
- Developing a relationship
of trust with the family in which time can be shared and understanding
can be developed.
- The approach is
flexible to take account of different needs
- Reassuring parents
that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual and encouraging
enjoyment in family life.
- Encouraging parents
strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their
children.
- Encouraging families
to widen their network of relationships and to use the support and services
available within their community effectively.
- Sharing their skills
and coping strategies as parents themselves, providing an increased
awareness of the children's needs.
- Motivation to help
increase self esteem, self confidence and a sense of worth.

They are not professionals,
so complement, but don't replace Health Visitors or Social Workers. Thus
they act as advocates, providing support and enabling the family to have
a voice and be heard.
